Geriatric Care
Geriatrics is a science of medicine which deals with health problems of people aged above 60 years. Many of the elderly persons carry the burden of one or more chronic diseases like hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, dementia etc. Many of them do not receive optimum health care because of the following reasons.
1. Access
Many elders suffer from diminished vision, hearing impairment, loss of memory etc. Their movements may be restricted because of arthritis, or neurological disorders. They may find it difficult to use public transport because of their physical condition and also the non availability of proper mode of transport. Even at the hospitals there is dearth of wheel chairs, assistance or guidance. All these factors make it very difficult for elders to use the health services provided by government.
2.Affordability
Majority of the elders poor and have no income of their own. So they depend on their families for health care expenses. Spending for the health care of elderly is generally not among the priorities of the families. The present medical care system depends heavily on expensive investigations and also references to various specialists. But many times the patients and their families are unable to spend the money and time required for going through these procedures.
3.Awareness
Many times there is underreporting of illness by elderly and also their families because they attribute the symptoms of the disease process to old age. The awareness in the society in regard to nutrition, substance abuse eg. smoking, alcohol etc. , healthy life style, health screening, health promotion etc. is very poor. The importance of treatment compliance, regular health check ups is not realized by the elderly or their families because of ignorance, financial compulsions and many other factors.
Age Care Foundation is providing basic geriatric care to elderly persons at a place and time that is convenient to them. ACF does not charge for any of the services rendered. Drugs are provided free of cost to those who can’t afford to buy them.
