A conversation with Shandilya Srivatsa. Interview with a passionate photographer, classical dance event organizer and International Arts & Cultural Foundation Founder. He has the following Accreditations and Awards Accredited photographer from the Department of Information and Publicity, Govt. of Karnataka. Advisory Panel Member - Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India (CBFC). Gourmand India award - `Best Cook Book Photographer' for the year 2007. Finalist for the Gourmand Cook Book award in 2007, hailed as the "Oscar for cook books" Founder - International Arts & Cultural Foundation, Bengaluru, a not-for-profit organization (NPO) whose larger goal is to help promote traditional arts and culture by providing fine arts related training to upcoming artists, possible financial assistance to deserving candidates, conducting practical workshops and events in association with government bodies and other non-government bodies that work towards promotion of traditional art forms, etc. Inspired by the works of his father, Shri Ramchandra, who was also a renowned photographer, he took to the camera at the age of 16 and stepped into the world of photography. His first assignment came way back in 1984. He started taking photography assignments soon after, while still a high school student. His first work appeared on a magazine cover just a year later, in 1985. He says, "I began freelancing and worked with the Kannada film industry doing still photography and earned great laurels. My work started getting published in leading newspapers and magazines in India and abroad and my reputation and skills grew". "I later on specialized in performing art photography & corporate photography. I took up assignments with various companies such as ABB, Siemens, Godrej, AstraZeneca and so on. I have shot photos of world leaders, corporate big-wigs, business tycoons, film stars and models from the fashion world. I have had the privilege of taking photographs of the then Prime Minister of India, Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, Prime Minister of UK, Tony Blair; corporate leaders such as Azim Premji of Wipro, Narayan Murthy of Infosys, Kiran Mazumdar Shah of Biocon, and Intel Chief Greg Barrot". To the art field in Bengaluru, Shandilya Srivatsa is a familiar name. He is also known as an organizer of classical dance events. From corporate photography to celebrity profiles and product photography, he has done it all. Having captured many moods and locations alike through the lens for over two decades now, Srivatsa is well-known in the media circles and the Kannada film industry for his work." With those words of introduction presenting you Sri Shandilya Srivatsa through conversation with Madhumathi, Kuchipudi Dancer How did you get into photography ? Before that what were you? Getting into photography was a cake walk with out any formal training, since my dad was a photographer, It was a family business. Basically I do corporate photography shoot Monday to Friday and week ends dedicated to art almost from 1990 I do photography for technology magazine,movie stars, corporate leaders And followed art photography with the technology changes in photography it was easy for getting adjusted to digital from analog since my studies was diploma and BE engineering was both computer science Since I was shooting for dancers and orginser lot of artists were requesting for stages to perform and the reply from organizers was not that positive. Looking at the dearth for opportunities for artist started an organization to promote art across boundaries 5 years back collaborated festivals with the various govt and Pvt organisations As an organizer what are the challenges you face As a organiser the main challenge is to keep the interested alive of the art festivals with the change times Changing times The real milestone was that Keeping ART as no gender India first ever International classical dance festival exclusively for artist from the trans gender community. Say something about Dance photography. What are the challenges in dance photography?. Performing art photography is purely timing, clicking at the right time With the photograph you can make the world know of the artist capabilities by shooting at the right time We will be doing an justices for the artist by shooting wrong poses by shooting at a wrong time Do you have plans to organize festivals in the cities other than Bangalore? ?. I am interested to collaborate festivals in different cities of the country and across the world Say something about your latest work Kavya Nrtiya? Kavita Nritya was dedication to the Karnataka state to make and help artists to get understand the rich poetries of Kannada by our Jnanapeeta awardee poets What are your upcoming projects? Next project is all women's world arts festival Feb 2017 2nd edition With all women teams of puppetry, kathakali,yakshagana. Next project is all women's world arts festival in February 2018, 3rd edition BRICS countries artists. What are the top 3 things that motivates you to be for what you are? 3 things: (1) you should be passionate (2) you should understand the art and the medium (3) we should think out the of the box to keep the passion alive We know you as Photographer and Organizer. Are there any more roles you play behind the scenes? Part of film industry on the boards, Part of the cultural ministry boards as advisor, Advisor to many organizations and festivals, Photography for film magzins and food photography, Organise many government and corporate cultural events.
