On the 28th January 2016, Keiko Watanabe, Japan presented a Kuchipudi Performance in Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Chennai. Keiko Watanabe trained under Smt Sathyapriya & Sri Kishore Mosalikanti. Here are the items performed.
1.Pranavakaram Pranavakaram is a composition of Oothukadu Sri Venkata Kavi in praise of the Pranavakara, the One whose face resembles the eternal symbol – the Om, the Protector who bestows goodness to all the lokas. The One with a pleasing demeanour, who enjoys His Ananda Natanam, as He effortlessly synchronises His beats to those of the Shiva ganas and the Sura ganas, while the Gods and sages revel in the joyful dance of the Lord. Pranavakaram – Ragam Arabhi; Talam Adi; choreographed by Shri Kishore Mosalikanti. 2.Siva Tarangam Shiva Shiva Bhava Bhava -in Ragamalika, Adi Talam, choregraphed by Sri Kishore Mosalikanti We now move on to the Tarangam, which plays a vital role in a Kuchipudi repertoire. 'Tarangam' is a term given to chapters in Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini by Shri Narayana Teertha. Here the dancer exhibits all the 3 aspects of dance - nritta or pure dance, nritya or abhinaya and natya or depiction of a story. Standing on the rims of a brass plate, the dancer answers the percussion. In this rare tarangam on Lord Shiva, the poet addresses Him as the auspicious One residing in Kailasa, who is the very existence and revels in His Dance of Bliss. Using choreographic licence, the five faces of the Lord are likened to the five elements. O Lord, I surrender to you. Please be my Saviour. The sanchari depicts the story of the River ganges. Through severe penance, King Bhagiratha brought the river down to Earth to purify the ashesd of his cursed ancestors. Legend has it that Earth was unable to bear the force of the celestial river. Fearing a catastrophe, Bhagiratha prayed to Lord Shiva who held out His matted liocks to soften her descent to purify the earth and wash away the sins of mankind. 3.Brahmamokate The next item is a krithi of Annamayya, a poet of the 17thequality.There is no disparity between the down-trodden and the upper class, as there is godliness in all living beings. The sleep of the king and that of the soldier is the same. The land they step on is the same for the high-caste Brahmin and a chandala. The sun shines equally on the majestic elephant and the small dog. Only the chant of Lord Venkateswara can save both the saints and sinners. Ragam Bowli – Thrisragati Aditalam, this piece has been beautifully choreographed by Guru Shri Kishore Mosalikanti. 4.Thillana Ragam- Kuntalavarali set to Adi talam, choreographed by Sri Kishore Mosalikanti. We continue with the Thillana – the finale of most South Indian classical dance repertoires. It is a dance of joy, of pure nritta set to intricate rhythmic patterns and complex movements. This is one of the masterpieces of the living musical legend Dr. M Balamurali Krishna. 5.
