'Ananda Nartana Ganapatim Bhaavaye' A Report- Bharatanatyam Performance of Kum. Sumana Santhanam - October 2015, Chennai - Organized by Oothukkadu VenkataKavi Trust Report Inputs - Naveena.  Kum. Sumana Santhanam, a disciple of legendary Bharathanatyam Guru Smt. K.J. Sarasa & Smt. Srekala Bharath, gave a solo Bharathanatyam performance recently under the auspices of the Oothukkadu VenkataKavi Trust, Chennai— an organisation dedicated to the propagation of the compositions of Oothukkadu Venkata Subbaiyer. Sumana gave her Arangetram at the age of 10 under the baton of Smt. K.J. Sarasa, the first woman-Nattuvanar of dance, whose disciples are some of the leading stars of the Bharathanatyam, film & political firmament. . Apart from the illustrious Chief Election Commissioner, Sri. T.N. Seshan, world-renowed artistes, Smt. Chitra Visweswaran & Prof. C.V. Chandrasekar blessed Sumana on her Arangetram. Ever since, Sumana has performed in many organisations in Chennai & in Tirumala. She has won a few titles, like ‘Bharathanatya Bhaskara’. She is currently pursuing 4th Yr in Architecture & is the niece of Kuchipudi & Bharathanatyam Exponent, Ms. Lakshmi Mani. Oothukkadu Venkata Subba Iyer is most popular for his compositions on Krishna, like Marakata Manimaya & the Kalinga Nartana Thillana, apart from his opus, the Kamakshi Navaavaranam. The repertoire that evening consisted of some known compositions, as well as some rare ones. Starting with the popular keerthanam, ‘Ananda Nartana Ganapatim bhaavaye’ in Raga Naata, Sumana went on to perform the most popular composition of the poet, ‘Marakata manimaya chela’. Depicting in brief the significant episodes of the Krishna Avatara, starting from His birth, the piece stood as testimony to the young artiste’s abhinaya & nrtta potential. The items that came post-Marakata, were rare ones. ‘Bhajasva tripurasundareem’ in Nadanamakriya delineated the glory of the divine mother, while ‘Raaman perumai solla tharamo’ in Natakurinji, paid obeisance to the scion of the Ikshvaku dynasty. Tillana in Sindhubhairavi brought the performance to a fine finish. Renowned vocalist-duo, the Bombay Sisters(Saroja-Lalitha) were among those who blessed Sumana with their presence & words. Sumana was ably supported by: Guru. Srekala Bharath(Nattuvangam), Chitrambari Krishnakumar(Vocal), Dhananjayan(Mridangam) & Shikhamani(Violin).
