A Report- Bharatanatyam Performance of Kum. Divya Ravi on 9th October 2015 at Rajangana, Udupi

It was a pleasant evening on 9th October 2015, and the much awaited performance of Kum. Divya Ravi of Bangalore, started at 7.15 in Rajangana, Udupi, having the divine aroma spread all over, due to the ambience created by the Krishna Temple, steps away. Having the selected audience, the program was sponsored by Udupi Krishna Mutt and Paryaya Shri Kaniyoor Mutt jointly and organised by Natyamayuri Vidhushi Smt. Lakshmi Gururaj of Nrithya Nikethana, Udupi.

The first item performed was ‘Vandana’, followed by Ganesha Stuti ‘Vandisuvudaadiyali’, a Purandara Dasa composition. The story of Ravana’s vain efforts to obtain ‘áthma linga’ was beautifully brought out in the sanchaari. It was a simple and indeed an elegant presentation. This was followed by Varnam, '‘Ennam en manam' wherein Divya wonderfully portrayed the pitiful condition of the Nayika, pleading Lord Krishna to alleviate her sufferings. The Bhakthi – Shringara rasa was the highlight of this number. The episodes of Krishna bestowing ‘Akshaya vasana’ to Draupadi and Krishna bestowing riches to Sudhama were neatly presented. The intricate Jathis of Varnam were choreographed by her Guru and the Sahithya portion was composed by the artist herself, which is a testimony for her command over dance.



Next was Javali, ‘Saramaina’ choreographed by her Guru. Divya successfully presented ‘khanditha nayika’ condemning her hero, for not coming home on the promised time. Expressions of sarcasm and suspicion on her hero were remarkable.


Bringing an atmosphere filled with divinity, Divya proceeded to her next number – a famous Purandara dasa keerthana – Jagadhoddharana. It was abhinaya at its best when she herself became innocent Yashodha, playing with naughty Krishna without knowing that he is the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent Lord himself. Divya concluded her recital with a brief and swift Thillana in Raga Rathipathipriya, which was choreographed by Guru Narmada. She captured the audience till the end with her same pleasant smile, graceful movements, precise postures, neat nruttha and the energy maintained throughout.

Divya was perfectly accompanied by her Guru, Dr, Soundarya Shrivatsa on the nattuvangam, Vidwan Sri Raghuram on the vocals, Vidwan Sri G. S. Nagraj on the Mridangam and Vidwan Sri Vivek Krishna on the flute.
