Rangapravesam - Sri Sai Dance Academy - Vishaka Santosh - June 16th 2018 Rangapravesam - Sri Sai Dance Academy - Vishaka Santosh - June 16th 2018 Venue - Alice Jepson Theatre, Richmond VA 23172 Report: Ameya Jammi Sri Sai Dance Academy student Kum. Vishaka Santosh performed her Kuchipudi rangapravesam on June 16th, 2018, at the Modlin Center for the Arts Alice Jepson Theatre in Richmond, Va. The rangapravesam was conducted by Smt. Sarada Jammi, founder and director of Sri Sai Dance Academy, supported by Smt. Ameya Jammi. The other orchestra members were Sri Vignesh Nurani Subramanian (vocal), Dr. Saritha Gomadam (violin), Smt. Lalitha Balasubramanian (veena), and Sri N. Somayajulu (mridangam). A special mention goes to Sri Somayajulugaru, who agreed to provide percussion support at the last minute when the original mridangist was forced to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances. The performance opened with “Vani Paraku”, a traditional prayer to Goddess Bala Tripura Sundari, the presiding deity over Kuchipudi. Kum. Vishaka’s first item was “Vinayaka Kouthvam" (ragamalika, adi talam), a composition of Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna choreographed by Padmabhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam. This piece was followed by “Siva Stuthi” (ragamalika, adi talam), also a choreography of Padmabhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam. The main item for the evening was “Siddhendra Stuthi” (ragamalika, adi talam), a choreography by Smt. Sarada Jammi. The song was composed by her father Sri Tumuluri Satyagopal in praise of Siddhendra Yogi, the father of Kuchipudi: “Hava-bhava yuta abhinaya rasa nidhi aadiyu antamu neevenayya”. The choreography described and portrayed the various facets of Kuchipudi dance – including the four abhinayas and the navarasas. The numerous jathis and the climax of the item when the dancer was balancing on the rims of a brass plate enthralled the audience. While the original composition is in Arabhi ragam, the vocalist, Sri Vignesh, arranged a beautiful medley of ragas to highlight the nava rasas. Following a brief musical interlude, Kum. Vishaka began the second half of the performance with “Lakshmi Pravesam” (ragamalika, adi talam), an excerpt of Padmabhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam’s dance drama Ksheera Sagara Madanam. This was followed by “Murugan Krithi” (rasikapriya, adi talam), a composition of Sri Koteeswara Iyer choreographed by Smt. Sarada Jammi, and Padmabhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam’s choreography “Dasavatara Sabdam” (ragamalika, misrachapu talam). The performance closed with a thillana (Dwijavanti, adi) composed by Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman in praise of Lord Krishna as a child, and choreographed by Smt. Sarada Jammi. *** All views are of the contributor. ********************************** PriyaLasya Classical Dance Platform - Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Mohiniyattam, Manipuri, Kathakali, Chhau, Sattriya Ameya Jammi, Sarada Jammi, Vishaka Santosh, Kuchipudi, Sri Sai Dance Academy, Richmond, Alice Jepson Theatre, Rangapravesam 062018.K29.R1 Appeal For Support ** Please contribute for a worthy cause of promoting Indian Classical Dance.
