Board design process flowThe board design process flow comprises of the following main stages Requirement specification -> Design -> Component selection -> Symbol creation-> schematics -> Layout -> PCB testing Component selectionThe selection of components involves a specific set of guidelines. Each component is selected based on thermal, mechanical and power considerations. The output of this stage is a high level BOM (bill of materials) Symbol creationThis includes both physical and logical symbol creation. The logical symbol creation is how the component looks on the schematic. The logical symbol creation should be done taking into consideration the ease of drawing the schematics and easy understandability to the layout engineer The physical symbol creation involves creation of the symbols taking into consideration the pitch, the length and width of the actual IC.These symbols will be the input in the layout stage SchematicsThis is the circuit diagram of the board.Using the logical symbols created, this stage will enable creation of the netlist and bill of materials. This will be the input to the next stage in the board design process flow(layout) LayoutLayout is the way in which the components and connections sit on the actual PCB. The placement and routing are the two important stages in this layout stage. The output of this stage is the gerber and BOM PCB testingOnce the boards are manufactured, board level testing and functional testing is done to validate the board. This includes testing with various test equipment like multimeters, oscilloscopes and analysers Compliance testing is done to make the board meet certain standards for release into the market. For the board to meet the standards care should be taken right from the design stage There are some parallel processes and analysis which are a part of board design.
