Simulation tools

Introduction

A study shows that more than 50% of the effort and money is wasted in rework and redevelopment.Only if this could be avoided.. Voila! The products can be deployed in the market well ahead of the competitors!!

The tool to achieve this is SIMULATION

Simulation is used to predict the future behaviour of any system. It marks as the first and critical stage in any product development. Simulation minimises the cost of development and rework.

Modelling and Simulation followed by analysis of the behaviour will result in selecting the best configuration for any product

There are various simulation tools in different areas.

These are some examples

  1. Modelsim tool for simulating the timing behaviour in an FPGA
  2. Pspice tool for simulating the circuit behaviour

CDK tool for processor developers

For the players who are in the processor development domain, here is a tool which will help in modelling the processor behaviour. The CDK tool from Sankhya. In expansion the CPU design kit.

The processor ISA can be modelled using the SMDL (Sankhya Model Description Language). The design can be verified and analysed using the CDK tool chain.

For more details on the CDK tool chain click on: http://www.sankhya.com/info/solutions/cdk.html

Product developers

The processor to be used for a particular embedded product is to be finalised. The different peripherals and devices to be connected have to be finalised.

This high level design could be finalised after the simulation of the entire board (using the Sankhya processor model and device model files) .This minimises the product development life cycle and helps the designers gain a confidence in the design (especially in products which are developed from scratch)

Modelling the various devices on the board can prove to be a very good way of cross verifying whether the configuration selected will yield the expected results with the predetermined cost.

In any case the change of the processor or any of the devices will result in minimal rework if it is identified at such an early stage.

Simulation of the board thus plays a key role in the entire development life cycle.
