PriyaLasya Classical Dance Divya Choodamani - Kuchipudi Performance - 27th February 2017 A Review by Bhavanvitha Venkatesh VAADA presented Kuchipudi dance performance of Divya Choodamani disciple of Guru Sri Hari Rama Murthy, Principal of Dr Vempati Chinna Satyam Kuchipudi Kalakshetra, Visakhapatnam, in Kala Bharathi Auditorium, Visakhapatnam, on the 27th February 2017. Introduction to the Artist and her Kuchipudi Parampara: Guru Parampara: Guru Sri Hari Ramamurthy, one of the senior disciples of Dr Vempati Chinna Satyam, and Principal of Padma Bhushan Dr Vempati Chinna Satyam Kuchipudi Kalakshetra, Visakhapatnam. He is a teacher, performer and choreographer. His recent dance dramas Kalayana Karthikeyam and Mohini Bhasamasura received wide appreciaiton from both learnt critics and general public both alike Divya initiated her training at a young age from Padma Bhushan Dr Vempati Chinna Satyam Kuchipudi Kalakshetra and her Guru. She is a Bachelor of Technology (Information Technology). During this her Kuchipudi journey to Rangapravesam she performed for her Institute and played key roles in Kuchipudi dance dramas like Ramayana, Chandalika, Mohini Bhasmasura etc besides other dance programs. Performance **************/************************************************************************/> Gajavadana, Sri Purandaradasa Keerthana choreographed by Guru Hari Rama Murthy to Hamsadhwani, Aadi Thalam. A good and auspicious start to the Rangapravesam, Divya brought the image of the Lord Ganesa in visual form describing Him.. Gouri Tanaya, Gajamukha, and as He who is praised by all, in the splendour of ornaments. The item set the Rangapravesam with an invocation joyous where her Guru explored into subtle and distinctive movements that depict the Gajavadanana, with symbolic moves of the Elephant God. The second item was "Lalitha Pravesam - Adugideynidhe.. Lalitha", by Sri DVS Sastry, choreographed by Sri Hari Ramamurthy. The item starts with a sloka of Sri Prayaga Ramakrishna and goes on to introduce Goddess Lalitha who is praised for her beauty, and as Supreme Mother who can bestow knowledge to her devotees. The item was presented in the soothing Lalitha Ragam so apt, in Misrachapu **************************************************************************************/> Jayadeva Ashtapadi - Sancharadadhara, Ragamalika, Aadi Thalam, Choreographed by Padma Bhushan Dr Vempati Chinna Satyam, to whose parampara her Guru belongs, set Divyanka to a higher level of performance. Jayadeva's Ashtapadis are considered a true test for dancers, be it in Kuchipudi or Odissi. Divya was all set to get into the core abhinaya segment of the performance, with two pieces before this item. In the role of a Virahotkantitha she portrayed of a lover completely lost in the thought of Lord Krishna, from ecstasy of being with him to realizing he is not around, and falling into the state of suffering and separation, "viraha". Divya did justice in this choreography from Sri Vempati Chinna Satyam passed on to her from her Guru. Saptapadhi, Krishnam Kalayasakhi (Sri Naryana Thheertha) and Yenthati Kulukey (Dharmavarapu Subbaraya Iyer) in Kalyani Raga underlined her grasp of the abhinaya through rigorous training over a decade under her Guru. The krithis delve deep into human emotions, every word and meaning replete with scope. In the Tarangam, Divya demonstrated her ease dancing on the plate and later in the Javali items that are typical of sensuous expressions, she maintained a fine balance moderated and graceful. The performance included "Chandrasekhara Sadhabhajeham", a Muthuswamy Diskhitar krithi in Marga Hindolam, Aadi Thalam and concluded with a Thillana in Putrika, Aadhi Thalam. It is always a bonus for the audience when the items presented by the artist are also supported by the team that musically composed and choreographed them. Support Support for the performance came from a team of accomplised artists - Nattuvangam - Sri Hari Rama Murthy, Vocal - Sri DVS Sastry, Mrudhangam- Sri Rajagoplachari, Flute- Sri VBS Murali, Veena - Sri VL Narayana, Violin - Sri R Dinakar, & Sri Jayakumaraachari. **************/************************************************************************/> Aesthetic Presentation Divya has natural expressive facial features and subtle eye movements that speak and reach the audience. More performance exposure and programs would help her to bring even more ease in her nritta. One of the important elements that go into as we see here is the perfect coming together of suitable "Aharyam", (Sri Kurma Rao & Sudha) what with her Guru Sri Hari Murthy guiding and ensuring aesthetic presentation of the traditional Kuchipudi. Divya presented a Kuchipudi that is true to the spirit.. her Guru's blessing. Here is a dancer who can charm the audience with her dancing skills. A suggestion, supporting artists may be introduced in one go rather than during the performance between each item. The audience need simpler introductions in order to have a flow of the performance items. This is to ensure that momentum is not lost.
