Natya Parampara Utsav - October 2016. Kuchipudi & Kathakali Performances NATYA PARAMPARA UTSAV 2016 From Kuchipudi Parampara Foundation Founded by Deepa Sashindran 21st October 2016 Seva Sadan - Bangalore Report by Srividya Angara Sinha The 21st of October, 2016 saw the Kuchipudi Parampara Foundation’s (KPF) signature dance festival the Natya Parampara Utsav conclude amidst much enthusiasm and praise from seniors and peers alike. The festival helmed by Kuchipudi artiste Deepa Narayanan Shashindran celebrates its third edition this year, with many prominent personalities of art and culture amongst its guests like Karnataka Kalasree Smt. Gangamma Keshavamurthy, senior Kuchipudi guru Sri Pasumarthy Keshav Prasad, Mohiniattam artiste and Director of Monisha Arts Smt. Sreedevi Unni, Kuchipudi artiste, art critic and management consultant Sri Bhavanvitha Venkat, and prominent Art critic Sri Nanjunda Rao. The Kuchipudi segment began with the very traditional, very vibrant “Amba paraaku” chant followed by noted Kuchipudi danseuse Maalyada Anand taking up the ever-popular KAmAkshi stuti “KAnchI nUpura ratna kankana dhara” choreographed by legendary Kuchipudi Guru Padmabhushan Sri Vempati Chinna Satyam. This was followed by another invocation to Ganapathi in the form of Tam tattai anuchu vedalina Sri Ganapathi in raagam Reetigowla and taalam Adi. Maalyada concluded her recital with the Meera bhajan “Govardhana giridhare” where Meera sings to Krishna “You rescued Draupadi from disrobement in the Kuru sabha, when then will you rescue me, for you alone are my refuge O Lord!” Sublime abhinaya in this bhajan drew appreciation and applause from many. She was ably supported by her musicians, Vidushi Smt. Ramya Suraj on the vocals, Vidwan Aditya on the nattuvangam, Vidwan Anand Srihari on the mrdangam, Vidwan Hemant on the violin and Vidwan Mahesha swamy on the flute. Dancer Ajay Kumar is renowned for his portrayal of Satyabhama, the beautiful consort of Krishna who announces herself proudly “I am Satyabhama, most beloved of Krishna’s 16000 consorts” in the immortal Kuchipudi ballet Bhamakalaapam-Pravesa Dharuvu - Bhamane Satyabhamane. Post the pravesa daruvu, Sri Ajay presented a short version of Ranguga naa meda, where Bhama implores Krishna not to forget that he is her husband despite all their altercations, followed by the famous Lekha, wherein she writes to Krishna asking him to come and meet her before handing it over to Madhavi, her maid-in-waiting and concluding with the piece “Sakunalu manchivaayenamma”. The Kuchipudi segment concluded with Deepa Shashindran presenting two of her original choreographies, the first one being Chandrasekharam, a composition of Bellari M Seshagiri Achar. The piece set in raagamaalika and Adi taalam, describes the many aspects of Lord Siva. She followed this with an ashtapadi “Kisalaya sayana tale” wherein Radha describes to her friend, the srngAra of Sri Krsna, of his holding her in an embrace that is aflame with desire, of his love for her, and of the way he expresses that love to her. This was in raagam Hamsaanandi and taalam Adi. The ashtapadi was followed by the popular Ramayana Sabdam in mohana raagam and adi taalam; a traditional choreography that was performed most competently by Deepa’s students - traditional choreography that was performed most competently by Deepa’s students Vinu Ambadi, Sreejil Babu, Haneesh Panicker & Greeshma. All of these presentations were supported by a live ensemble with Vid. Pradesh Achar on the vocals, Vidwan Aditya on the nattuvangam, Vidwan Anand Srihari on the mrdangam, Vidwan Hemant on the violin and Vidwan Mahesha swamy on the flute. Post the Kuchipudi performances; there was a brief felicitation ceremony where Guru Pulikeshi Kasturi was honoured for his efforts towards the propagation of the classical arts and its various nuances. The Natya Parampara Utsav concluded with a Kathakali performance Kalyana Sougandhikam.The lead dancer in this was Kalamandalam Vaisakh who portrayed Hanuman in this subplot from the Mahabharata wherein Bheema is taught a lesson in humility. The story unfolds when Bheema who encounters Hanuman in the forest, mistakes him to be an old, infirm monkey and arrogantly asks him to move aside. Hanuman feigns innocence and asks Bheema to move his tail and make space for himself. Bhima try as he might is unable to lift the tail and realizes that this is no ordinary monkey. At this point Hanuman reveals himself and blesses a now-humbled Bhima. Kalamandalam Praveen portrayed Bheema, while the music was by Sreerag Varma and Sadanam Vivek. On the Chenda was Kalamandalam Sreeraj, while maddalam and chutty were by Kalamandalam Sreejit.
